Material Considerations for Injection Molding

The selected grade shapes drying requirements, tooling and dimensional control.

  1. Drying & Moisture

Drying needs vary by resin. Confirm the grade’s moisture limit and drying conditions before molding.

  2. Melt & Mold Temperature

Confirm the processing window and equipment temperature capability for the selected grade.

  3. Shrinkage & Reinforcement

Use grade-specific shrinkage data. Reinforcement orientation can affect warpage and final dimensions.

  4. Flow & Weld Lines

Review wall thickness, gate locations and weld lines, especially around load-bearing features.

FAQ

High-Temperature Plastics FAQs

Have a specific material requirement? Talk to Our Team →
Is heat deflection temperature the same as continuous-use temperature?

No. HDT measures deflection during a specified heating test under load. For continuous operation, check the selected grade’s long-term thermal data and actual service conditions.

Which materials should I consider for repeated steam sterilization?

PPSU is a common candidate for repeated steam exposure. Confirm the specific grade against your sterilization temperature, cycle count, cleaning agents and mechanical loads.

Should I choose an unfilled or reinforced grade?

Reinforcement can increase stiffness and change shrinkage. Choose according to loads, dimensional needs and surface requirements, accounting for reinforcement orientation.

Can every material listed on this page be injection molded?

No. PTFE must be modified before it can be injection molded. PBI requires suitable injection-molding blends, while injection-molded PAI needs post-curing.

What information should I provide for a material review?

Send your CAD files, target quantity, operating temperatures, loads and chemical exposure. Include critical tolerances, compliance requirements and any preferred material grades.
